How long does it take to create a shopfront shutter artwork and what is the process like?
It takes me around two weeks to complete a shutter artwork from start to finish. First, I visit the shop for inspiration. Next, I develop a sketch of the artwork and buy tools required during the painting process. I really look forward to interacting with the shop owner and other residents in the neighbourhood.

What is your most memorable shutter artwork?
Wing Kee Hardware in Ap Lei Chau! I love watching Mr Kwok, the owner, working on traditional sheet metal crafts. Even though there are no readymade products displayed at Wing Kee, Mr Kwok can customise almost anything for his customers. It is such a pleasure to be able to document his craftsmanship in the artwork.

What is the most important thing about community art for you?
I love that community art is closely related to the neighbourhood. It’s great to see different people communicating with each other because of the artworks.

What do you do if you're looking for inspiration?
Running or doodling.

What made you want to become an illustrator?
Because I enjoy telling stories through illustration.

What advice do you have for youngsters who are passionate about illustration?
Keep drawing and exploring the world. Eventually, you will discover themes that you find interesting to explore!

What is your favourite book?
My illustration book A Love Letter to Yau Ma Tei. If I like my own publication, then other people will like it, too.

Telling Stories Through Shutter Art

There are many reasons to make a living. Some people take over family businesses so that their family legacy can live on. Others strive to keep their native culture and heritage alive, and there are those who work hard simply to serve their community.
